Federal Election Referendum on IR

[November 2007]

This Federal election is about your future wages and working conditions.

Under John Howard’s WorkChoices legislation –
  • Employees have been stripped of the right to take an unfair dismissal case;
  • Employees have had their wages and conditions slashed after they have been forced to sign Australian Workplace Agreements (eg Darrell Lea Chocolate Shops, Morgans IGA)
  • Only 5 bare minimum conditions of employment are guaranteed. You can lose penalty rates, public holidays, overtime, 17½% leave loading, meal breaks, tea breaks, 5 day week, rostering protections, redundancy provisions etc.
  • The independent umpire – the Australian Industrial Relations Commission – has been stripped of its power to fairly settle workplace disputes, eg rostering issues;
  • When enterprise agreements come up for renewal your employer can give 90 days notice and terminate the agreement automatically, slashing the employees’ wages and conditions;
  • If you start a new job or get a promotion, you can be forced to sign an individual contract or AWA as a condition of employment – if you don’t sign you don’t get the job.
If John Howard is re-elected you are sure to see:
  1. your enterprise agreement come under further attack:
  2. many more employers using AWAs to slash wages and conditions;
  3. a second wave of harsh industrial laws making things worse;
  4. an attack on WorkCover, health & safety legislation and long service leave.

It is your democratic right to vote for the political party of your choice. Your vote will determine the future direction of industrial relations in Australia.

In deciding how you will vote you will need to think about the harsh industrial laws and what type of future you want for yourself, for your friends and for family members.

Your vote can make a significant difference to the future of Australia.
