Accident insurance is one of the most valuable benefits that the SDA provides to its members.
If you had to insure yourself with a similar type of policy, it would cost you more than $450 each year.
The 2017/2018 year saw a higher number of claims for benefits compared to the previous year. There were two Total & Permanent Disablement (TPD) claims and two Partial TPD claims settled which totalled $97,159.
These claims arose from our members suffering permanent paraplegia, a leg amputation above the knee, a fused thumb and a broken arm where the bone was shattered.
The most frequently occurring claims throughout 2018 were for broken wrists and ankles, but this year also included numerous broken hips.
The most common causes for these injuries were playing sport, falling over and falling down stairs, but more unusually there
were injuries caused by members being fallen on top of by a friend, hit by a tree branch and rolled on by a horse.
The SDA Accident Insurance Scheme continues to be a major benefit for our members, and we are always seeking to improve the coverage and amounts payable. In 2018 we increased the amount up to $80,000.
