Here at the SDA we realise that healthy lifestyle is important, but sometimes overwork and stress can take its toll - the SDA offers a range of health benefits to help maintain balance.
Free Accident Insurance up to $112,000
“The upgraded SDA Accident Insurance Scheme is another way your Union stands by you — offering real peace of mind when life takes an unexpected turn. “
Michael Donovan - State Secretary
The SDA Accident Insurance Scheme is here to support our members in times of need — not just at work, but in everyday life. With recent improvements, financial SDA members now receive even stronger protection, 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
Stronger Cover, More Support
For many years, all financial SDA members have been covered by the Union’s free Accident Insurance Scheme. The SDA continues to strengthen this policy, with increased benefits and new features — at no cost to members.
The scheme provides cover for a wide range of serious injuries that occur outside of work, including:
$1000 benefit for injuries caused by unprovoked workplace assaults*
Fractures and broken bones
Loss of limbs, sight or hearing
Full or partial tendon tears
Arthroscopic or reconstructive surgeries
Death or permanent incapacity
When You’re Covered
The scheme applies to accidents caused by violent, external, and visible means that occur outside of work hours. SDA members under the age of 80 are covered worldwide*, no matter where the accident occurs.
This scheme complements workers' compensation — providing you with additional protection when you’re off the clock.
Need to Make a Claim?
If you’re injured in an accident outside of work, contact the SDA as soon as possible. Claims should be submitted within 30 days of the incident. We’ll guide you through the process and help ensure everything is in order.
To find out more or request a copy of the full policy terms, contact your local SDA Branch.
We’re With You – At Work and Beyond
The SDA Accident Insurance Scheme is one of the many ways your Union provides real value and support to members. We're proud to stand by you — every day.

Free Counselling Service
Converge International provides the SDA Member Support Program, a professional counselling service that offers confidential, short-term support for issues that may be affecting you at work or at home. SDA members are entitled to three free one-hour counselling sessions per year with Converge International, upon referral from the SDA. In the event of a crisis, family members can also receive counselling - this is included in the SDA member’s three-session entitlement.
Please contact the SDA on (03) 9698 1400 or freecall (from landline only) 1800 133 048 for a referral. For urgent support after hours, call Converge International directly on 1300 687 327.
We understand that our members from time to time come up against difficult times in their lives and need assistance from government and community organisations.
For this reason the SDA has compiled a Social Welfare Referral guide that our Officials can use to assist members in their time of need.
SDA's Information Officers can guide members through the wide range of services and benefits provided by Federal, State and Local Authorities, and show you how to apply for them.
The referral service covers such areas as:
Centrelink
Charitable organisations
Domestic violence services
Youth services
Alcohol and drug service
Victims of crime
Public housing
If you need help finding the correct organisation to be put in touch with, ring one of the SDA's Information Officers who will be happy to refer you to the appropriate service.
The SDA in partnership with Guardian Defence, offers members free self defence courses - a great way to improve fitness and learn some valuable skills at the same time.
For more information, members can contact Guardian Defence directly on 9383 4848 or at www.guardiandefence.com. You will need your member details when booking.
The SDA is taking a historic case to the Fair Work Commission to end junior pay rates for workers 18 and older and to increase pay for most workers under 18. We’re taking aim at age discrimination so adults are paid fair wages.
